The National Photography Museum is located in the Hidalgo Cultural Center on the corner of Hidalgo Street and Arista Street.  It exhibits the work of great national and foreign photographers.

The museum began in 1984, in the building that was once the San Francisco Convent.  This unique place exhibits photography in an educational way, presenting the different physical and chemical procedures involved in photography.

History Museum

The History Museum is located in Pachuca’s State Congress Civic Center (also known as Capilla Civica de la Constitucion or the Constitution Civic Chapel).  It can be found in a room in one of the corridors of the Legislative Government Building.

This museum features photographs and original national and state historical documents.  The first section has a wealth of interesting photographs including a photo of President Venustiano Carranza.  The second area holds books and documents from the State of Hidalgo’s declaration to Governor Reports.

The Tepeapulco Archeological Museum

49 kilometers southeast of Pachuca, on Highway 105, you will find the Tepeapulco Archeological Museum.  Its rooms hold a collection of pieces from many different explorations of the nearby Xihuingo site. Among the exhibits, you will find war tools used by the ancient inhabitants of this land.

Tepeapulco also has a Casa de la Cultura (House of Culture) that is worth mentioning.  It promotes art from the state of Hidalgo with painting, photography and many other types of art exhibits.

The Acosta Mine Site Museum

On the old road to Guerrero, in Real del Monte, you will find an original and interesting industrial archeology site:  an old mine turned museum.  This was one of the richest mines in Hidalgo, but the resources were exhausted and the mine was abandoned.  In 1998, several scientists studied and shared their findings.  Thanks to their efforts, the museum was established.

There is a cavern, almost ½ a kilometer wide, visitors can cross (outfitted with a helmet, lamp, boots and mining overalls) to get an idea of how difficult mining work really was.  Visitors can also tour the old warehouses, engine rooms, and the Superintendent’s house (which was nicely reconstructed) to experience what the life and work of the miners was like.

Religious and Ethnographic Museum

36 kilometers northwest of Pachuca de Soto, via Highway 85, in the ancient cloister above the San Nicolas de Actopan Convent, you will find the Religious and Ethnographic Museum.

This cultural museum offers visitors a panoramic view of the colonial history of the region and the ethnic groups who inhabited Hidalgo before the arrival of the Spanish.  It has four permanent exhibit rooms, as well as carved wooden furniture, oil paintings and sculpture from the 18th and 19th centuries (including the outstanding sculpture of San Nicolas Tolentino).

Hours:  Tuesday – Sunday, 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m and 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.
